Campaign to Save Rescued Baby Birds

BirdCare Aotearoa’s nurseries are a hive of activity this holiday season, with hundreds of baby birds in need of urgent care. From native species, cared for under the Department of Conservation’s special permit, to beloved songbirds, the organisation’s hospital is filled with tiny lives depending on expert help to survive and thrive.

However, BirdCare Aotearoa is facing significant financial challenges. It costs an average of $180 to rehabilitate each bird, yet donations typically amount to just $12 per bird. Without government funding, the organisation relies solely on the generosity of the public and grants to keep its hospital running. Annually, BirdCare Aotearoa incurs over $1million in expenses to provide life-saving care for thousands of birds. These costs cover skilled clinical staff, specialised nutrition, medicine, pain relief, and rehabilitation efforts.

This Christmas, BirdCare Aotearoa has set an ambitious goal of raising $200,000 to help meet these essential needs.

How You Can Help:

Friends of BirdCare Aotearoa recurring donors will receive one donation tax receipt at the end of the financial year (March).

For receiving receipts and invitations:

Recurring donations by credit/debit card – email address will automatically be added to communications database.

BirdCare Aotearoa is entirely funded by the generosity of donations and grants. We are currently fundraising for $300,000 to upgrade the centre’s aviaries and facilities, to help recovering birds and fledgling chicks practice flying ahead of their release back into the wild.

These upgrades and additions to our facilities will also cater for increasing admissions, and provide additional quarantine capacity, ensuring we can continue giving life-saving care to rescued birds in the event of a major disease outbreak.

BirdCare Aotearoa would like to give a huge thank you to Kärcher Home & Garden for donating a professional steam cleaner, commercial grade wet & dry vacuum cleaner, and a quiet, compact dry vacuum cleaner for using in the hospital. The equipment was specially delivered to us by a Technical Sales Representative to show us how to use it!

We are extremely grateful for Kärcher’s generous support and for making it so much easier for us to keep everything nice and clean around the centre!

A big thank you to two very special girls!

BirdCare Aotearoa would like to thank sisters Scarlett (10) and Mila (7) who raised $510 from their fundraiser at St Joseph’s school in Orakei www.facebook.com/sjorakei

Scarlett and Mila sold chocolate chip cookies, lolly cakes and homemade lemonade. They love animals, and have also fundraised for the SPCA in the past.

St Joseph’s school is a little school with a very big heart, teachers and parents fully supported the initiative and were very impressed with Scarlett and Mila’s commitment.

The team at BirdCare Aotearoa are very grateful to these wonderful girls for their dedication and support of the care of precious wild birds. Their donation will help to feed a lot of hungry baby birds this summer!

A successful fundraiser!

Ruru hooked up to our new infusion pump.

Thanks to the support of the community, BirdCare’s recent annual Theatre Evening at Titirangi Theatre successfully raised the funds to purchase a much needed infusion pump.

An infusion pump is a device which controls the administration of small amounts of fluid to help a bird recover from injury.

The usual drip hook-up you might see in a hospital setting doesn’t work as well. It is a gravity fed system which does not provide the constant flow of pressure required to prevent blood clots developing.

In addition, constant movement by the patient makes it difficult to administer accurate amounts of fluid. The drip also needs replenishment several times a day by a hospital attendant so birds may not receive the attention they need overnight.

The difference an infusion pump makes is that a patient can receive continuous and controlled amounts of fluids including pain relief 24 hours a day. This is of huge benefit in aiding their recovery.

This Morepork (pictured above) arrived at our facility at 4pm, completely unresponsive and unable to open his eyes. Under normal circumstances, he would receive fluids and pain medication and then be placed in an incubator overnight. However, with this late admission prior to closing, his prognosis would be poor.

With the purchase of our infusion pump, the morepork would instead receive continuous and constant fluid infusions overnight, restoring his hydration and controlling his pain. As a result, the team is greeted the next morning by a Morepork on his feet, eyes wide open, and on the road to recovery… rather than a sad ending.
